EmpireDay3 - Journals
June 5th, 2006 @ 12:19AM

so, I got the new monster machine and spent all weekend alone with it. If it made coffee and did laundry, my wife would be in trouble...

but I've been thinking lately about a keyboard from long ago that I miss very much and wish I had never parted with. although it's sounds are all used up for me and it holds no new technological secrets, I kinda want it back. is it wrong?

but if I had the technology I have now back when we made black sky horizon, would it have felt as good? it certainly would not have sounded the same - probably a good thing... but I digress. I'll leave it there for a while.

okay, okay. I could have waited until the price dropped a little more, but I just couldn't help myself! Yes, yes indeed I went and ordered myself a new keyboard! In fact, I got my eye on another one, too - shhhh don't tell anyone.

so, I'm perusing the net today keeping an eye on this keyboard I've been drooling over since it came out waiting for the price to get just right so I can make my move. It's almost to the price point where I'm gonna jump on it and my wife says " you already have keyboards, what do you need another one for?" so I respond, "you've already breathed in and out once today, why do you need to do it any more?"

she tries to be supportive, really she's all around wonderful, but sometimes she just doesn't get it....

of course I need more keyboards!

did somebody say August? Yup, they sure did. While the actual recording, mixing and mastering of the album will probably be done long before then, we'll be putting together artwork and pressing some copies and we're shooting for a commercial release date in August - I am certain that you will most likely hear plenty of the action as it happens right here on DMusic.

well, for the first time in 7 months I actually have something to post here. After 2 years of dinking around and hashing over musical ideas, I actually believe empire day may finally lay some new stuff. We'll probably have two dozen new songs by the time we're done since we've explored so many different new directions - but hey, why not right? I can honestly say we have come light years from our original stuff - lots darker and more grooves than you can shake a stick at. If you're actually reading this, go to Distilled1's page and tell him that empire day needs to get their asses in gear because you can't wait any more. Because if those guys don't come over soon and finish their tracks, I'll have 3 albums worth of songs done by March all of them needing guitars and vocals dammit. Rich and Marvin need a good poke in the ass to get things rolling and anyone reading this can help me with it by dropping them a note to not let empire day go before it's time. It will be worth your time when you hear the new stuff. Honestly. Sometimes I go back and listen to stuff that is in the works and wonder how in the hell I ever came up with it because it's too damn cool to have come from me. But, it actually did. So there ya have it.

hot dog! The new material is materializing. I have 8 tunes ready for tracking for the rest of the group and am working on several others. Rich began tracking last weekend and we spent quite a bit of time hashing over the sound. We're really trying to combine the retro-pop feel we're known for with sounds you haven't heard before or wouldn't think typical. Know what I mean? All in all, I am quite excited by the sound. We have decided to use the new tools we have to re-hash a couple of the old ones that we really wished at the time could sound bigger, and since the first album was a little light in the production dept (mainly due to financial restraints) we can now beef them up and make them sound the way we wish they always did and we are going to include them on this album. Anyone wishing to know what I am using in the control room feel free to drop me a note and I'll make ya jealous as hell.

from the ashes, they rise. Empire Day lives - and with bigger and better prospects than they have ever had. Stay tuned, loyal viewers.

Well, I haven't posted a journal in a while, so I thought it was about time for an update. I was hoping to have some new empire day news at this point, but, alas, it appears that Empire Day has played their last riff together as a group. Interests outside of the band have kept them from laying a single track in over a year and it appears that individual musical interests will be pursued - so fret not! I will still be sequencing and looping some bad-ass grooves and I'm sure Rich and Marvin will be whipping out a killer riff from time to time. As to whether they post them on the Empire Day page, I couldn't tell ya, but hopefully they will share with the rest of the class so we can all partake in their musical endeavors.

The studio is back up and running. After completely rehabbing the downstairs, from building new walls to laying new flooring, running new electric and trying my damndest to make a decent sounding room, my efforts have come to fruition. The control room area is complete with hardwood floors and enough area to work comfortably, while the main recording room is roomy enough to lay some tracks. The isolation room is still in the works, but should be completed soon. But what the hell, it is a basement after all. It ain't much to look at but it sounds good! I've begun accepting bookings starting the end of this month and am already booked through May. I'll be laying some keyboard tracks and doing some sequencing for a friend of mine who has started up another project. He and I go all the way back to the late 80's. So that'll be good fun. I've been asked to assist to produce a group that has been frequenting my studio for a couple of years now on their new project. They'll be taking their time and laying tracks for an upcoming release that they really want to be high quality (as opposed to demo quality), so that'll also be good fun.

I'll update from time to time and may ask Rich to post some things on the Empire Day page so I can share with y'all what's happenin, and I'll check in to see what Marvin and Rich are up to and keep everyone posted on the developments.

peace and hairgrease.

Happy New Year to all. My resolution this year: listen to more artists on Dmusic! I never seem to have enough time and those forums are so damn inviting. I really, really, really want to do something interesting musically this year. Ideas, suggestions, musicians in IL that want to jam and see what happens - drop me a note! I wish everyone the best, health and prosperity to you and yours in '05!
